Sourav Ganguly Slams Dhoni about his retirement comments

Written by SCGanguly.com. Posted in News

Sourav Ganguly feels that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is no longer interested in playing Test cricket.

Ganguly termed Dhoni’s comments to take a call on his Test career by 2013 as a joke.

“He is obviously under a lot of pressure as a player and a captain. I wish he is joking and trying to divert the attention of media after getting tired of answering routine questions about the team’s poor showing,” said Ganguly.

Ganguly said Dhoni’s comments were ill-timed.

“If he is really serious, then it is not sensible of him at all to make such a comment 24 hours before the start of an important Test match. I definitely feel that Dhoni does not enjoy Test cricket. His performance in Test and ODI cricket is poles apart and by making such a statement right now, he has also perhaps explained his complete disinterest in the longer format of the game,” Ganguly told a TV channel from Perth.

Kapil Dev, who led India to a famous World Cup win in 1983, feared that Dhoni’s comments could create a rift in the team.

“If Dhoni has made up his mind to quit Test cricket, then the same should have been conveyed to the selectors and the board after returning from Australia. His first priority right now should be to win the Perth Test. He made this team No.1 and his focus should be to achieve that goal once again. The timing of his statement is completely wrong. It is fine if the team knows about it otherwise the squad can fall apart midway through the tour with players thinking about their next skipper rather than focusing on the game,” Kapil said.

“Team should be brought together in such trying circumstances. But Dhoni’s comment has created a huge doubt, not only in the team dressing room but also amongst the fans back home. There was a time when between 28 to 32 years, a Test cricketer used to peak,” he added.

Ganguly was surprised with Dhoni’s comments that he wants to take a call on his career keeping in mind the 2015 World Cup.

“I don’t understand that how can one continue to play the game with the sole goal of participating in the World Cup? Also, one should not forget that the 2015 World Cup is in Australia. If you cannot play well Down Under right now, what is the surety of doing it in 2015,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly is an asshole, who talks like a
stupid and frustrated former player, he wants to see Sehwag as captain who has
not scored century outside subcontinent after 2008. He wants to settle his
score with Dhoni because he made him see the door. Country should rather listen
to Gavaskar, Kapil and Shashtri not asshole like Madanlal or Ganguly.

So, what is the fuss, Dada? Dhoni understands the demands of three formats, just as you do, and said that he would decide to quit a format two years later. What is wrong? He is still in the helm for two years; a good-enough span to erect a successor. Why can’t people see a simple truth and a simple practical reality in this simple statement? I am surprised that you and Kapil jumped so promptly to interpret something that was not in the statement at all!

Dada, while criticizing Dhoni, I believe you agree that a captain is as good (or bad) as are the other 10 players in the team. When you followed-on in 2001, there were your players who collectively stepped up (Rahul, VVS, Bhajji). Could you have won (or, even drawn) that match had none of them stepped up? Unfortunately, the same is a distant dream now. Of your three long-term comrades, one is chasing a 100th glory, two are ghosts of their own self. The bowlers are taking wickets but after conceding 5+ runs an over. Your long-term mate Rahul is dropping such sitters that Kamran Akmal would be proud. How does a captain turn things around? Especially when the openers fail, the “wall” crumbles, the great man trudges of after a 30 or 40 or 70, VVS refuses to show his specialty, fielders drop sitters, opposition batters are allowed plenty of fours and threes? Can he shout at Rahul/VVS/Sehwag/Virat? Can he plead/urge them to perform? What does he do? Is it not understood that each player–at this stage–understands his role in the team, in the match, and the country’s expectation (which is very reasonable) from him? I don’t believe Dhoni is at any fault; it is a collective failure that the entire team are responsible for. It can be remedied only by completion of the series.
