It was the third day’s play of India vs. Australia 2nd test at Sydney, when a Bengali reporter caught up to the former Australian captain Steve Waugh to ask him some questions about the ongoing series.

Steve said, India had a great opportunity to win to win in Melbourne, but squandered a golden opportunity and here in Sydney India played some real bad cricket. Yes, the bowlers tried hard, but it was never enough. The Australian batsman looked very comfortable in the middle.

And then the reporter threw in the golden question to Steve Waugh, “You played, against Sourav Ganguly the Captain & now you saw Dhoni the captain, how will you rate them?”

Steve said, Ganguly was more confident to win in Australia than Dhoni. Sourav injected a sense of a self-confidence inside the team, a never say die-attitude, under him the team never gave up. They team had an attitude made of hard steel; they would just not be intimidated by the Australian conditions. Dhoni on the other hand, is a bit cool, I can’t term it bad, but certainly in Australia, to beat the home side, you need to like Sourav, a bit more aggressive. The team should have an attacking mentality at all times; this is what Sourav used to do very well.

Just proves yet again, that MSD may have won two world cups, may in few years win more tests than Sourav Ganguly, but Sourav Ganguly will still be & forever be the Greatest Indian Captain ever, respected not just by his fans, but even more so, respected by the opponents he played against. And ultimately that’s the true evaluation of any sportsman, how much his opponents respected him as a player. So yes, be it now or forever, Sourav Ganguly will always remain the Greatest ever.

First thing, this article might have been written by a Bong, but Steve Waugh, whose opinion formed the crux of this article, certainly isn’t. Trust me, the entire world doesn’t give a damn about your opinion, but they value Waugh’s opinions. Secondly, yes, you are right, Ganguly did perform below par as a captain, but at least he scored 300 runs in the Aus tour at an average of 50, 360 runs in the England tour at an average of 60 and 350 runs in the WI tour at an average of 55. Whereas Dhoni just managed his first half century in Australia in 6 tests. Ganguly scored a 144 in Brisbane to save the match plus set the tone for the remainder of the series, Dhoni amassed a total of 141 in the entire Aus tour in 2008. In the England tour he managed just 1 or 2 half-centuries. So see for yourself who is more under-performing.

How many tests did we win before ganguly ? How many did we even come close to wining ? the graph was at zero, Ganguly took it to another level…..What did Dhoni do ? WIth the same team, he maintained the Graph at constant level for few days & now its coming back down & soon to zero.

No 1 ranking came, when out of 26 tests, 6 tests were only played away that also included Bangladesh!! So what is so special about Dhoni d test captain ?/

The NZ team which India defeated was just whitewashed by Bangladesh (for Christ’ sake, Bangladesh!). No Bond or Tuffey, but the insipid attack spearheaded by Chris Martin, who, while a decent bowler, is never known to trouble batsmen, and certainly doesn’t come within miles of Bond. Add to it the minefield of pitches during the 2003 tour, where the entire batting of either sides collapsed categorically, insofar as the game became a game of Russian roulette for both. That’s not an excuse, but certainly don’t compare that tour and NZ team with those of the last year! Same goes while comparing the WI teams of 2002 and 2011. This one didn’t have a Hooper, Lara or Gayle. Most of the players had hardly played 20 tests until then. Agreed, there was no Sachin, but the batting was opened by Ajay Ratra either! Yeah I agree to your point Mr. Neeraj Verma. At the same time Sir Ganguly never had a straight 6 test match loss in abroad. He had the passion and he never thinks about defensive measure at max he will make the team to win and motivate to be bit aggressive on exposing the talents of the team. He is a best captain who would do a lot of experiment and came with a plan when there is a need. Is it really a matter to fight on? Although the title seems bit biased but such statements keep creeping on when your team performs exceptionally good or extremely bad. Here are two references which come from great players and they talk something entirely different. So be rational and don’t fight over a statement. concept of worshiping living god, no one is god on earth. A captain leads the
team, and achieves different levels of success, because of given situation. Who
knows, tiger Pataudi with modern facilities, and today’s team might be ten
times more successful than Ganguly or Dhoni. Ganguly had players like Kumble
and world class batsman at their pick, Dhoni had wonderful one day team but
aging legs of test team. Just to support don’t belittle other, even Ganguly

yaar, ganguly produced so many match winners….but where is dhoni……those day aus,,s africa,pak…nzl were better opponents with better players….from no where ganguly produced match winning habit at home as well as in abroad. he had to perform against better opponent like aus in 2003….and it was also in abroad but 2011 wcup was at home. in those days…. most of the team had great no of greatest players…..dont forget about srilanka ….it was a great team then…so…..dhoni is not bad….but dada is the best

Well for me Ganguly was best captain India ever had till Date… but now that era is over and our present captain is Dhoni. He has done well, he has got us 2 world cup. At that time he didn’t have so many option at that time but he still managed to playd final in 2003 world cup at southafrica. and look at dhoni . He and his team play good cricket in asian countries but when they go to play outside the aian he never won not even single match . Problem with you guys are you suffer from selective amnesia, in last two three years, Ganguly was more venerable than Suresh Raina in playing short pitch bowling. Ganguly’s team always fumbled (except one or two) in final of major tournaments, and carrying a title of chokers. Ganguly’s major contribution was that Indian team started to play as unit, and this was missing in Azhar’s or Tendulkar’s team. Cricket is a team game; even best captain may look ordinary leading an average team.Dhoni had nerve of steel which very Ifew ndia captain had in past. Ganguly was a dumb fuck person, who had no strategy even after making into the world cup final in 2003. He never knew how to utilize the skills of his players, he is not a risk taker, and always lacks innovative ideas to left opponent clueless. Whereas Dhoni knows a art of capitalizing players and extracting best out of them. We can’t dub Dhoni’s strategy as “gamble”, this is the way how you bring innovative elements in the game. Wining T20 world cup 2007 and One day world cup 2011 is not a gamble, and don’t forget Dhoni was an instrument in winning the world cup in 2011. Ganguly was just an average captain, but also had a big “ego” (remember Greg Chappell episode). He didn’t prove fighter that time, but was certainly not able to digest the fact that he has become old hog with lack of energy in the field, pathetic fielding and failed batting performance. Dhoni surely is man. Sorry dada you were good but don’t stand when compares with Dhoni.

Thanks Goutham for your reply. However, I have a an explanation to all your points. First of all, it is a wrong notion that Ganguly taught India to win matches, it was Sachin (remember Sharjah 1998), Ajay Jadeja (remember 1996 quarter final against Pakistan) and even Robin Singh, who were always the aggressive cricketers and brought a killing instinct in the batting line up. When Ganguly was made captain, he already had an establish players with the likes of Sachin, Dravid, Kumble, Laxman, and Sehwag (who was at his peak form always in his initial years). Bhajji made a debut in 1998, and was the only expert spinner after Kumble. So, Ganguly did not build any team or taught how to win matches. It has always been team effort. Whereas Dhoni, with young team in T20 World cup, proved the world how to capitalize the players (remember last over given to Joginder Sharma instead of Bhajji, which made us won the T20 world cup). Yes Yuvraj was an instrumental, but as I said its a team effort, even those days Sehwag was instrumental in winning lot of matches when Ganguly was captain. And, if u look at the records, u will find anything great in Ganguly’s captain ship, in fact India has won more ODI matches under Dravid’s captain ship. Also, we shouldn’t forget that Ganguly is a egoistic person, who did not embrace the retirement with the dignified way such as Kumble or Dravid. He wanted to throw weight around and goes on proving the world that I am not finished, which unfortunately he was finished in batting, fielding and overall. He had become liability in IPL and Shahrukh thrwm him out and media experts and ex-cricketers suggested that he shouldn’t lead Pune, and yet shameless and egoistic Ganguky didn’t give up. These are not the killing instincts, but just a mere ego. Whereas Dhoni is cool and knows his business better than Ganguly in every respect. Common man, he made is win the world cup after 28 years and was instrumental in taking the team to victory. Ganguly ofcourse was a good players and a good captain too, but Dhoni is better in overall aspect of the game and charisma.
