Sourav Ganguly ”The Role Model”
Sourav Ganguly may never himself take any credit for his & the Indian team`s accomplishments(during his time) but young players who have now become successful men still vow by him. Ganguly backed his men to the hilt and in return he got their unconditional loyalty.
Yuvraj Singh , Harbhajan Singh,Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehera and Virender Sehwag are few of the talents Ganguly unearthed while these men went on to become the Side’s main stay also the backbone of the 2011 World Cup winning team.
There were no swinging doors rather he backed and pushed those harder whi looked like giving up.
Yuvraj Singh once said ,”I ‘ m ready to die for such a captain.”
How many times does one comes across such a life ‘n’ death qoute in ones entire lifetime as a fan.Very rarely. But that is how things have been with and around Sourav Ganguly. These words may sound like flow of high octane emotions of an overwhelmed youngster, but this has been Ganguly’s USP. To bring out the best or the worst in people connected to him.
Even Bhajji, Tendulkar, Shewag, Zaheer & many others have come out and spoken their mind on the Chappell-Ganguly saga. With everyone backing their ex-skipper.
His century at Brisbane in 2002, stands as a personal favorite as it was the best example of his captaining style. To perform with grit when his team-mates looked uncomfortable against the bouncing Australian pitches.
He gave a clear message , if one man’s fight can save the game, with a collective effort the Aussies were beatable, even in their backyard. It’s the spirit that Ganguly exuded was infectious. And this is the same kind of effect that made him a ‘Cult Figure’.
Young fans today call themselves ‘Gangulians‘ , something even Tendulkar cannot boast of. Even after hanging his boots , the man continues to create a fan following for himself among the everyone. One small example would be a certain facebook page called “Sourav Ganguly is Our God” which already has 1051 members in 2 months. People dont just love him, they worship him.
Even today as a commentator, Ganguly doesnt talks like others , he talks like a Captain. He may have given up the job but instincts are still alive and the mind is still ticking. All Ganguly and Gangulians would ever wish for is a better farewell , a grand curtain fall to an illustrious career come IPL 5 & 6.
I will end this article with two words.
